This gorgeous Victorian era serving dish features a hand painted on porcelain delicate floral pattern with gold enhancement. Satin inside finish. It is a sophisticated item dating probably from the 1900's made by a very talented artist. It is not signed but bears a very unusual PRUSSIA stamp with a winged animal. In Canada, during the Victorian era, china painting (on high quality whiteware imported mainly from Europe) was an artistic endeavour in which women predominated. It was influenced the Arts and Crafts and Aesthetic movements. By the turn of the 20th century, every properly educated young lady knew how to paint on china. Some amateurs became very good, their work as good as that of professional china decorators, and each piece is as unique as the talented individual who painted it.
In Quebec, it was often taught to girls in religious schools, mainly nuns' schools or convents. Some of these Quebec schools are well known such as Saints Noms de Jésus et de Marie convent in Longueuil, that of the Ursulines in Trois-Rivières and Villa Maria in Montréal.
